The fizzy drink business is lucrative - they entice you i with words like "sugar free", "lite" and adverts show laughing happy people sipping away.  But did you know that the can could contain chemicals that are dangerous to health?

HMHB would like to stress we are not looking at any individual drink here, and it is up to people what they drink. We are not telling people how they should deal with this issue - that is choice. But it is good to hear some facts.

Many fizzy drinks contain phosphoric acid, which is used to restore rusty metals. It is also used to remove hard water stains and mineral deposits. In large quantities, phosphoric acid can weaken bones by pushing the calcium out, and it has also been liked to chronic kidney disease.

It is also likely you will find sodium gluconate in the list of ingredients. This is used to reduce the bitter taste of some sweeteners. But it is also found in steel cleaner and in some cement.

Artificially sweetened drinks also contain a variety of potentially harmful sweeteners. Adesulfame K could cause problems with insulin production if you consume a lot, potentially adding inches to your waist, and raising the risk of diabetes.  Aspartame has caused controversy for decades - a mid-90s study linked it with brain tumours, cancer, lymphomas and leukaemias.

Sodium Benzonate, which is commonly used as a preservative, has been shown to switch of parts of the DNA, linking it to liver problems and Parkinson's disease.

There are other nasties too. Chemicals like sodium citrate, which neutralise acid in urine and is used to treat kidney stones, may be added to some drinks, as well as phenylalanine, which is known to cause nerve damage. This is also a known allergen, which causes some people to experience itching of the skin, swelling of the eyes, mouth and tongue, and problems breathing in severe cases.

It's an eye opener!!!
