Heavy drinking health problems

Heavy drinking as a young adult can cause health problems in people's 60s, even if it stopped by 30, says a Study.

Researchers looked at 664 male army veterans and found those who had alcohol issues for five years when younger generally had poorer physical and mental health.

Dr. Randy Haber, of Palm Alto, California, said early chronic drinking can cause lasting injury to the body and brain.

The research showed that those with alcohol dependence in young adulthood had, on average, three medical conditions in later life. Those who did not, reported two. And the damage was noted even among men who had been free of dependence symptoms for as long as decades.  The Study was published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.

However, if you can stop heavy drinking and generally "take care of yourself" will benefit in later life.

HMHB recognises drinking is a choice. But can become a naughty habit, with more and more consumption. It is the responsibility of the individual to monitor their consumption and recognise if it is becoming a problem.  Heavy drinking can take a while before symptoms show that are damaging. It is too easy to turn a blind eye in early life.
