Can eating late be dangerous? a doctor's advice

Image result for eating late at night

We all do it. Eating late, or snacking in the early hours, is common. But it can cause problems.

Dr Rachel Cooney, a consultant gastroenterologist at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust says it is best not to eat after 8pm.

"Eating at night raises your risk of acid reflux. You produce more stomach acid after a meal, in order to digest the food properly. So, if you are lying down relatively soon afterwards, acid is more likely to get into your gullet.  As well as being uncomfortable in the short term, there are many problems associated with long=term acid reflux, namely oesophageal cancer.  Ideally, eat your evening meal at least four hours before going to bed."

Another study has suggested that snacking late at night could increase your risk of diabetes and heart disease.
Researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, found that eating late at night raises glucose and insulin levels, both of which are causes of type 2 diabetes. They also found evidence that poor timing of meals can affect cholesterol levels which can increase the risk of heart disease or suffering a heart attack.

It appears they want to take away all our treats!!!
