We are all aware that being overweight or obese is detrimental to your health and can lead to physical health problems and disease, but did you know it has a direct link to your life expectancy?

Overweight people slash their life expectancy by a month for every extra pound of fact they carry, suggests research.

If two men were thee same average height but one weighed the national average weight of 13.16 stones, and the other weighed 14.16 stones, then the heavier guy is likely to live one year and two months less than the lighter one. And those that smoke a packet of cigarettes a day will live seven years fewer .  However, each year spent studying beyond school adds 11 months to your life!!!

Scientists at the University of Edinburgh analyzed the genetic make-up, lifestyle habits and parental lifespan of 606,000 people. Researcher Dr. Peter Joshi said: Staying slim, not smoking and staying in education for as long as possible appear to be the secret of a long life."

Their conclusions raise the prospect of a genetic test and questionnaire to predict how long somebody can expect to live. Cigarette smoking is the single factor which has the greatest likelihood of shortening lifespan.

The research did find one gene which affects blood cholesterol levels and reduces lifespan by about eight months, and another linked to the immune system that slashes it by half a year.
