Could there be an "Exercise Pill"?

Apparently, at the time of typing, it has been reported that scientists are close to developing an "exercise pill", which is said to be giving people the benefits of physical activity without breaking sweat. HMHB is skeptical to say the least - but let's take a look.

They have identified a key protein the body releases during workouts. Named "Piezo 1", it acts as an 'exercise sensor', boosting blood flow to the brain and muscles to sustain activity. It also restricts the amount pumped to the stomach and intestines.

Experts claim these changes may be partly responsible for the benefits of exercise, such as lower risk of heart disease, stroke and cancers.. The British team say that the Protein;s release in humans could be triggered by a pill containing a known compound called Yoda 1 - honestly, it is named after the Star Wars character!! They said that Yoda 1 had a similar effect on tests on mice.

Professor David Beech, of the Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine, said: "It may be by understanding the working of Yoda 1 we can move closer to having a drug that can control chronic conditions."

The drug, which may have human trials within the next four years, would obviously not fully replace exercise. That would be impossible. But for people bed ridden maybe, or with crippling arthritis, it could prove to be a great boost.  Thy also suggest that if you go for a healthy walk, and take the pill, you may get the value of a run, even though you are walking.

HMHB hopes this would only be available to those who physically need it!!
