Supplements - let's look at some facts - part two

Can they cause me harm?

Research has shown that some supplements are no only unnecessary, but also potentially harmful.
Too much Vitamin D over a period of time can cause a build up of Calcium in the body, which can actually weaken bones and damage the kidneys and heart. The recommendation on a Vitamin D supplement is 10mcg daily. However, many pills are sold with a much higher dose than that.
Although overdosing is one way that vitamins and supplements can do more harm than good, even standard doses can interfere with the way prescription medicines work - so always get your doctor's advice before taking a supplement - even a natural one. Our own Lazza is not allowed St. John's Wort as it would affect a daily  medication he has to take.
But Vitamin D, Cod Liver Oil, Omega 3 and Glucosamine has been shown to interfere with medications for many conditions, including High Blood Pressure, Cholesterol and Diabetes.

Can I trust the labels?
You have to be a bit sceptical - they do not always do what they say!!!
Glucosamine is found in supplements for Joint Health, mobility and flexibility, but there is not enough evidence that it actually helps with any of them (at time of typing this) - and in fact is has No authorised health claims at all. But we have seen one bottle that says "helps support bone health, cartilage health, and energy metabolism."  However, they are there purely because the product contained Vitamin C.
