Improving your mental health - Part 2

A healthy mind is crucial to your overall well-being. Just look at our business name
Healthy Minds, Healthy Bods.

Our last blog entry explained:  Knowing how to deal with your feelings and enjoy life, even when things seem overwhelming, is key. If you want to start feeling better about yourself, boost your self-confidence and live the best possible life, the first step is looking at your daily routine and ways you can improve it. We all pick up bad habits, but it is important to realise what they are, remove them, and this can have a huge impact on your mental health.

here are 3 more ways:

Stop Procrastinating
To procrastinate is to put off something continually - in other words, someone who wants to lose weight says they will start tomorrow, then the next day, then the following week - the job never gets done.
This can be dangerous for your mental health - and HMHB totally understands this issue. We have people who describe themselves in the past as being "kings of procrastination".  It can cause stress and anxiety - and of course the problem or issue never gets solved.
The best idea is to make yourself a "to-do" list. This itself can be therapeutic - as long as you do not allow the length of it to cause problems. Then set yourself deadlines to get things done. Aim to remove one or two a week from the list. This could be just contacting someone, or tidying something. By working like this, slowly items will go away. Deal with the crucial ones first. Even bring in people to help you. Make yourself accountable by telling friends what you are doing - they can encourage and motivate you.
In the end, it is down to you to take responsibility, face the problem, and stop putting off solving the problem.

Get better sleep
Wow - yes I know - this is much easier said than done. I, myself, have had sleep problems for a long time. I know of people who say they will never be able to improve, but that is not the mindset. I ask them if they are doing everything necessary, and of course they are not.
It goes without saying that sleep is crucial to your mental health and overall well-being. Sleep deprivation is common. It can cause anxiety, depression, make us irritable, and people can then use other ways to help them relax. This can include alcohol or drugs (which can both have the opposiate effect and keep us awake longer). It can also mean people eat more for comfort, leading to issues around being overweight.
Ask yourself, are you seriously doing everything you possibly can to improve your sleeping patterns and behaviour? I am sure there will be things you can do better. It is not an easy solve - and we at HMHB certainly do not judge.

Change the way you think - to growth mind-set
HMHB's Ajani program is focused on mind-set, and improving the way we look at life, and situations overall.
It is very easy, when going through mental health problems, to focus entirely on the negative parts of your life. Depression can overwhelm you, and thinks just appear bleak.
The trick is to train yourself to start seeing things as a challenge and not a hindrance. This is, in itself, a challenge. We at HMHB have suffered this issue both in our personal lives, as well as on many occasions as we set this business up. If you wake up with bad thoughts, research shows that will then reflect the day you have.
We need to sometimes find a way to step back, take a breath, and look at life in a different way. Destructive behaviour can sometimes feel the only answer. Drugs and alcohol can make the situation disappear for a few hours. That can be comforting.
Life is too short.
We say: "we all have the responsibility to make the best choices possible to ensure we have a healthy life. We have one body and it is up to us to look after it."
