Improving your mental health - Part 1

A healthy mind is crucial to your overall well-being. Just look at our business name - Healthy Minds, Healthy Bods.

Knowing how to deal with your feelings and enjoy life, even when things seem overwhelming, is key. If you want to start feeling better about yourself, boost your self-confidence and live the best possible life, the first step is looking at your daily routine and ways you can improve it. We all pick up bad habits, but it is important to realise what they are, remove them, and this can have a huge impact on your mental health.

here are 3 ways:

Start living in the moment.
If you look online, these days everyone at events are recording on their phones. We are not saying your should not take pictures. We do that for HMHB at events, on our walks, at fitness sessions and with friends. But we can be fixated on our mobiles. We talk to friends online - would it not be better to meet up in person, if practical? We  converse by email and text. Why not get out of the house/flat and chat face to face. Enjoy this planet and the people on it.
We spend hours playing computer games, either using consoles or phones, but then complain we have not got the time to do physical activity or get outdoors. We watch box-sets now, spending hours in front of the television, when there is so much of this planet to explore and enjoy.
We are not saying we need to be out all the time - but if you are reading this and realise you can improve - and we all can - then make it a project in the next couple of months to put down the phone, step away from the television, and explore your local town or city!!!

Step Outdoors
The summer is here - well it may be a bit overcast today as I type, but the days are lighter for longer, and should be warmer. Naturally, I know many people have work where they are stuck indoors, but I am sure many of us can improve the amount of time they can spend outdoors - either on your own or with friends.
Exposure to sunlight is crucial for your well-being. It can have a massive impact on mental health, affecting depression, seasonal affective disorder, and even the quality of your sleep. Sunlight is a natural source of Vitamin D. If you have Vitamin D deficiency, this may cause you to have low immunity, feel sad, lose energy leaving you feeling fatigued, and can bring on digestive difficulties.
Get out for a walk, explore the local town or city - this is great for physical activity too.

Do some exercise
During our Ajani program, we introduce in mild exercise as a way to help with your mental health. It can be a frightening word to some - they feel they need to be doing an hour of intense cardio or weights. But that is not the case at all.
Exercise is not just about getting into shape, losing weight or putting on muscle. Yes, it does improve your physical health, but the hormones it helps to release into your body can boost your mood and have a positive effect on your mental health. I can bring on feelings of calmness and help you focus on problems.
Always listen to your body, but try and push yourself to do more exercise - get walking, biking or jogging. Join a local gym if you can, or look out for free events - there will be some around. Even go to your doctor if you are concerned. They will probably be aware of local charities and initiatives that can help you start up. HMHB manages a couple of fitness sessions, as well as walks. But ultimately it is up to you, as an individual, to take responsibility and make better choices around fitness and exercise.
