We are growing up now in a time of multiple take-aways, food shops, coffee outlets, fast food venues, with less cooking and sedentary lifestyles.

However, a new study has suggested that eating burgers and chips slashes sperm count even in young healthy men, affecting virility.

Researchers from Harvard University, who presented their findings at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Vienna, analysed semen samples from 2935 military recruits aged 18 to 20, and quizzed them on their diets. Unsurprisingly many were not eating healthily. Those who ate a western diet of red meat, white bread, sweets and sugary drinks had the lowest sperm count. Those on a healthier diet of fish, chicken, fruit and vegetables, produced the most.  It should be pointed out that those who were vegetarian fell between the two.

Hormone levels indicated that irreparable damage may have been caused to the sperm making cells of the men with low counts. It was also suggested that it may have happened years earlier if they ate badly as children.

The recruits, from Denmark - not the UK, who ate healthiest, produced 42,8 million more sperm on average than those on the unhealthiest diets.  Low counts are normally usually identified at a later age when men have trouble conceiving. Not normally in the age group tested.

Dr. Jorge Chavarro, from the Harvard University team, said: "young men should know diet may affect their sperm count". The 'sperm expert' (yes, there is one) from Sheffield University, Professor Allan Pacey, added; "this shows the power of diet".

HMHB says:
Yet again, here are signs to show the benefits of a healthy diet to enable us to have happier lives. We cannot see what goes on in our bodies. If we did, would people smoke, drink to excess, take drugs, and eat the "bad" foods consistently? HMHB says we still should eat what you like. If you fancy a burger, then that is great. However, it is what you do over a long time that defines you. Treats are treats. It is your own body you are affecting. It's your choice!!!
